Today we're having a look at the debut EP from Katrin the Thrill. Occupying a space somewhere between Radiohead and Tori Amos yes somehow more malancholy, Katrin brings a set of mellow rock tunes reminicent of both her native Greece and London, where she and her band currently call home. So how does the Earth is Calling Us EP stand up? Quite well. Read on.
I found this to be quite the enjoyable listen. The laid back drum beats ooze a kind of quiet swagger that draws you in. The guitar work is as gloomy as it gets. Before the vocals come in, one imagines that they'll be greeted with some sort of Reznor-esque growl but when Katarina Panopoulou's sultry voice sneaks in, it's a pleasant surprise. They've done a fantastic job of setting up a really cool vibe but they've avoided taking it too far.
After multiple spins through the EP, I can't really find any fault. It's about as impressive as debut EPs get. I can't say enough good things about this group. Make sure to check out Katrin the Thrill on their home page or on their Facebook page. Earth is Calling Us is currently available on iTunes. Go buy it right now.
